Summary of Diagnostic Tests Offered

EMG-NCS or Electro-Myography-Nerve Conduction Studies:

An EMG-NCS is a very useful test to determine the functional status of the nerves and muscles of the body. Such a test should only be performed by a qualified Neurologist. We will provide EMG-NCS services with or without a Neurological consultation, depending on the referral request.

Many other facilities use physical therapists or technicians to perform this study. In our office, the EMG-NCS test is performed by Dr. Athni, who is Board Certified in Neurology, with NeuroMuscular sub-specialty training. The EMG-NCS test is performed in the Neurodiagnostic Laboratory, using the most up-to-date computer equipment, causing minimal pain / discomfort to the patient. A report will be generated within 24 hours, and faxed immediately to the referring physician (thus providing "immediate turn-around").

Neuro CardioVascular Non-Invasive Ultrasound Imaging:

In the course of a neuroloical evaluation, it might be necessary to perform some imaging studies. Some examples of these imaging studies are: Echocardiogram, Carotid Doppler, Transcranial Doppler, Periorbital Doppler, or Arterial Doppler Studies of the arms or legs. These imaging studies are performed at our NeuroCardioVascular Echocardiography Laboratory, which is approved, certified, and accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). We are the only Neurology facility in Middle Georgia to have gotten such an accreditation.

VNG - Video-Nystagmography

A common complaint is "dizziness" or "unsteadiness" or "feeling woozy". Such symptoms can sometimes be very difficult to sort out. Various neurological problems can cause identical symptoms. Sometimes, problems with the "brain" or "inner ear" or "muscles" or "nerves in the feet" can induce such symptoms. To try to differentiate between a problem with the "brain" or "inner ear", the VNG test may be ordered. We have a Board Certified Audiologist who performs these studies within our office using specialized computer equipment.

EEG or Electro-Encephalogram:

EEG's are an important tool to assess the functional status of the brain. All EEG's are performed at one of the local hospitals or at a local EEG lab. The test will be administered by a certified EEG technician. Dr. Athni will oversee the procedure, review the EEG data, and interpret the findings.

Polysomnography or Sleep Studies:

Sleep disorders can cause various neurological problems. Sleep studies can be used to diagnose various sleep disorders. Our sleep studies are performed at one of the local Sleep Labs, located within one of the local hospitals. Dr. Athni will oversee the procedure, and interpret the findings.
