EEG = Electroencephalogram
What is an EEG?
An Electroencephalogram or EEG is a diagnostic test which examines the "brain waves".
Are there different types of EEG studies?
We offer three (3) types of EEG studies:
(1) hospital based, 30 minute EEG
(2) portable, ambulatory, outpatient 3 to 5 day EEG
(3) portable, ambulatory, outpatient 3 to 5 day VIDEO-EEG
Which type of EEG is the most ideal?
Each type of EEG is used for different purposes. Which EEG is best for you will depend on your individual clinical situation. Dr. Athni will discuss these options with you during your office visit.
When is an EEG useful?
An EEG is most commonly used when a diagnosis of seizures is considered.
What is involved during the procedure?
An EEG is painless. It involves attaching numerous electrodes to your scalp. A certified EEG technician will perform the study, overseen by Dr. Athni. These electrodes are connected to a computer which measures your brain wave activity. These brain wave measurements are reviewed and interpreted by Dr. Athni.
Will an EEG always diagnose a seizure?
A normal EEG does NOT mean there is "nothing wrong with you". It also does NOT absolutely exclude a seizure or any other disease. The results of the EEG are used in conjunction with your clinical symptoms and other diagnostic tests, to make a final diagnosis and conclusion.
