LP - Lumbar Puncture
What is a Spinal Tap or Lumbar Puncture?
A lumbar puncture (or LP), sometimes called a "Spinal Tap", is a simple medical procedure used to obtain some brain fluid for further testing.
Who performs this procedure?
It is performed either by Dr. Athni or a Radiologist. It is usually done at the hosptal in the "Outpatient Center" or in the Radiology Department.
How long will the procedure take?
The actual procedure takes approximately 20 minutes, but you will be observed by the nurses for 2-4 hours after the procedure.
Will the procedure cause any pain?
Before the procedure, "numbing medication" is administered to the lower back to minimize pain and discomfort.
Will my Spinal Cord be damaged during this test?
Your spinal cord will NOT be touched or damaged during the procedure. The LP needle is inserted approximately 6 inches below your spinal cord. There is NO risk of spinal injury from this procedure.
What are the common side effects from this procedure?
The most common side effect is headaches after this procedure. If you were to experience a headache after a lumbar puncture, please discuss this with the performing physician (Dr. Athni or the Radiologist) so appropriate treatment options can be considered.
